WhatsApp is introducing a new feature for Android beta users that allows importing profile pictures directly from Facebook or Instagram, streamlining the profile photo update process.
According to WABetaInfo, a platform that tracks WhatsApp developments, this feature appears in version 2.25.21.23 of WhatsApp’s beta app on the Google Play Store. The update adds new import shortcuts in the profile photo settings.
Previously, WhatsApp users could upload images from their device’s gallery, take a new photo using the in-app camera, or opt for avatars and AI-generated pictures. The latest test build adds another method: directly selecting a profile image already set on Facebook or Instagram.
To access the feature, users must open WhatsApp’s profile photo settings and choose either Facebook or Instagram as the source. This requires linking WhatsApp to the Meta Accounts Center—a tool that manages integration across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
The Meta Accounts Center offers centralized control for connected services, including profile data syncing, cross-platform content sharing, and unified login options. However, using this profile photo import feature remains optional and disabled by default.
Importantly, WhatsApp confirmed that enabling this feature does not affect the platform’s privacy protocols. End-to-end encryption for messages and calls remains intact. The update only modifies how profile images are selected and does not impact other account settings.
The rollout follows WhatsApp’s recent efforts to enhance personalization. Another update now allows displaying both a regular profile picture and a digital avatar together, with visual options like animated effects and background customization.
As of now, the profile photo import feature is limited to a subset of Android beta testers but is expected to reach a wider user base in the coming weeks.
